I first heard of “Seussical Jr.” on Wedneday evening (it was due to open the following night) when contacted the take some photographs for the school scrapbook. “Seussical Jr.” as I discovered is a musical based on the beloved works of children’s author Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, with a story that weaves elements from fifteen of his books and incorporates characters in the most unexpected ways. This is truly a “kid-friendly” show and is for kids of all ages, even us older ones.

In 2008 Little Flower National School Ballytarsna realised a dream by staging their first musical ‘Honk Jr’ which proved to be hugely successful. It was the magic of that show that planted the seed of their next dream. Three years on, ‘Seussical Jr,’ grew into reality thanks to the efforts and endeavours of the pupils, staff, parents and friends.

School principal, producer and musical director Siobhán McGrath Byrne, ably assisted by work colleagues, did an outstanding job with the large cast (the entire pupil population) who thrilled us with their energy, talent, and enthusiasm.

This show was a joy to watch and a real feast for the eyes. Mary and Brendan Healy produced some of the most colorful and creative costumes ever seen in any show. Margaret Butler Doyle and her band delivered sounds befitting a West End production. P.J O’Connell and Ricky Martin’s whimsical set fitted in perfectly with the whole theme of the show. This show had every part working in perfect harmony to result in a spectacular event.

From the opening note of the brilliant orchestra to the cracking of the egg and the arrival of the elephant bird, the pupils of Little Flower N.S. lifted our spirits and challenged our imaginations. They whisked us through their world of wonder, acquainting us of the ‘little ones of Whoville,’ how right Horton was “a person’s a person no matter how small.”

A galaxy of little stars sang their way into the hearts of three full houses in Brú Ború Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The audiences responded with standing ovations, gobsmacked with the colour and sheer brilliance of the production.

To the teachers and the backstage team, we say thanks for the miracle showing us a hundred and six pupils performing with discipline, timing and above all talent, ensuring that down the road in their future lives, the confidence they gained and displayed on stage will stand them well. Thank you Ballytarsna, you did your school and your place proud.
